GARDEN BIRD BATH

Square, Which Almost None of Them Are

The column is square in section, flaring to a square foot, and the basin above is squared as well with a shallow recess cut into it. Straight edges throughout.

Bird baths are round because bowls are round and columns are turned. A square section is a different manufacturing decision and a different look, and it is the reason this one sits properly beside square paving slabs, a concrete wall or a straight edged border.

The finish is exposed aggregate, coarse and speckled, so the surface has real grain in it rather than a smooth cast face. At 27.5 pounds it holds position without help.

What Makes This Bird Bath Different

  • Square section, in a category that is almost entirely round. Bowls are round and columns are turned, so nearly every bird bath is a circle on a cylinder. A square column with a squared basin lines up with square paving, straight borders and rectangular planters instead of sitting awkwardly among them. In a garden built on straight lines that is the difference between a piece that fits and one that is merely placed.
  • Exposed aggregate rather than a smooth face. The surface has visible grain and speckle in it, so the concrete reads as material rather than as a moulded shell. It also hides marks better than a smooth gray face.
  • Twenty seven pounds on a wide square foot. Level ground and it stays put. The square base gives a broader stance than a round foot of the same width.
  • Keep the water shallow. Add a shallow layer of water and keep it below the rim. Refresh it regularly.
Where to put it

Square paving, a rendered or concrete wall, a straight edged border, a modern courtyard. This one is built to line up with things rather than to soften them. 22.8 inches is a safe height for birds. Leave open ground on the approach and keep cover within a short flight.

Setup, Care, and Warranty

Setup and placement

Two pieces, no tools. The basin sits onto the column under its own weight.

Set it on level solid ground. A square piece shows misalignment against square paving, so take a moment over it.

Filling it

Add a shallow layer of water and keep it below the rim.

Keeping it clean

Exposed aggregate hides general marks well. A soft brush every few weeks keeps the recess clear.

Winter

Drain the basin before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Sealed concrete comes through freeze and thaw well when dry.

3-year warranty

This product includes a 3-year warranty against cracking. Coverage, claim requirements and required documents are subject to the warranty policy that applies at the time of purchase. Keep your order confirmation and contact customer support with your order details if service is needed.

Questions Before You Choose

Why square rather than round?

So it lines up with square paving, straight borders and rectangular planters. Almost every bird bath is a circle on a cylinder, which sits awkwardly in a garden built on straight lines.

What is the finish like?

Exposed aggregate, coarse and speckled, so you see grain in the concrete rather than a smooth cast face. It also hides marks better than a plain gray surface.

Where does it belong?

Modern courtyards, square paving, concrete or rendered walls, straight edged borders. It is built to align with hard landscaping rather than to soften planting.

Will birds actually use it?

The flat rim gives a clear landing edge and the recess stays shallow. Add a shallow layer of water and keep it below the rim.
