Bark Deep Enough to Cast a Shadow
The trunk splits and folds the way old bark does, with fissures deep enough to hold shadow at midday rather than only at a low sun. A burl swells on one side with a bird perched on it.
The basin is thick walled with a broken edge, moss toned rather than clean gray, and a second bird sits on the rim. It looks like a section of standing deadwood that filled with rain.
Of the trunk designs this is the one that commits hardest to looking real, which means it needs a setting that agrees. Under trees, among ferns, in shade planting. It is the least suited to paving and the best in a woodland corner.
What Makes This Bird Bath Different
- Bark with real depth, not surface texture. The fissures are deep enough to hold shadow through the middle of the day, which is what separates cast bark from moulded bark. Shallow texture reads flat once the sun is overhead, and that is when most faux timber gives itself away.
- Two birds, at two heights. One on the rim and one on the burl below. Two figures at different levels give the eye somewhere to travel, which a single cast bird cannot.
- A broken basin edge. The rim is uneven the way split timber is, which gives wet feet far better grip than a smooth stone circle and keeps the illusion intact at close range.
- Keep the water shallow. Add a shallow layer of water and keep it below the rim. Refresh it regularly.

Setup and placement
Two pieces, no tools. The basin seats onto the trunk.
Turn the burl and the perched birds toward where people pass. Set it on level solid ground.
Filling it
Add a shallow layer of water and keep it below the rim.
Keeping the bark sharp
Deep fissures hold more debris than a smooth trunk, which is the trade for the depth. A soft brush every couple of weeks keeps the shadows reading properly.
Winter
Drain the basin before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Check the deeper bark recesses are clear of standing water when you drain it.
