DESCRIPTION

Our Seedling and Propagation Mix is perfect for seed starting or propagating a stem or leaf cutting. It is designed to be much finer and moisture retentive than our other mixes and is compatible with all plant types. The components in this mix provide seeds and seedlings with an ideal physical structure ensuring adequate water retention, ideal oxygen flow, as well as excellent drainage.

Note in the comparison image the material looks quite different when bagged dry vs. damp. We will try to dry most batches when we can so it keeps that more distinctive look, but if it all looks dark, rest assured it’s the same recipe and performs the exact same! It’s just bagged damp, right after mixing sometimes. 😊

Our core chunky & gritty mixes are built for more robust root systems, but this mix is compatible with all plant types that might need to be started from seed/cutting. Because it is more moisture retentive, you may see color variation bag-to-bag (we still mix and bag by hand!).

WHAT’S IN IT

  • Coconut Husks, Calcined Clay, Hardwood Biochar, Earthworm Castings

*Note: This mix also works well blended 50/50 (or less) into any of our other mixes for a finer, more water retentive hybrid mix. This mix on its own isn't designed for adult plants to live in long-term.

As a pre-release exclusive, please also be aware:

  • We are going to keep these discounted to solicit feedback from our community, like yourself!
  • We packed this baby with beneficial microbes, so you'll likely see a little bit of mycelium which will look like the beginning of mold in some cases. Definitely don't discard this "white gold" and just blend it all together if you see this and plant in the mix as-is!
  • We'd LOVE to hear via email, IG, or live chat what you think of the look, feel, and overall experience. Ultimately this should perform better side-by-side than any competitive seedling mix you have on hand!
  • We're starting with the Gallon (4 Quart) size, but are planning to introduce a 2 Quart smaller size before the end of the year.

SEEDLING TIPS

Let me first say that seedlings are a really fun way to garden! It's not that complicated, and it is SO rewarding! Sometimes you'll run into issues you weren't expecting, so I'm dropping a few notables from my years of playing around with all sorts of soils, seed species, and growing setups:

-Biodegradable seedling cells don’t typically degrade fast enough to keep them in the cells for transplanting, so still plan to remove the root ball and plant in your desired transplant location when ready.

-Biodegradable seedling cells usually grow mold on the underside with a rich, damp seedling environment, so don’t be alarmed when you see that (using any brand).

-Not all seeds in a seed packet will germinate, so add at least a few seeds to each cell. Germination rates get worse year after year, so if you have old seeds it may take more to get some good seedlings.

-Using really small cells makes your life a little harder and might require transplanting before they're really ready.

-Without adequate air flow, seeds can suddenly get a disease that causes them to quickly wilt and die (Google: damping off).

-Cactus seedlings indoors can take a WILD amount of time to grow large enough to be ready for normal cactus soil and watering treatment.

Various plant types sprout differently:

  • Fast sprouting seeds: lettuce variations and most veggies
  • Slow sprouting seeds: many herbs like basil or cilantro
  • Perennial wildflowers as an example usually also need some help like “cold stratification” where you have them in a damp paper towel in a sealed container or ziplock bag in the fridge to get them to sprout
  • Some specific types of seeds need you to manually chip or break the outer-most shell to allow for growth to begin once planted (Lupine for example)
